Covid 19 Update message from Senator Duckworth
May 8, 2020
Dear Neighbor, Thank you for contacting me to express your support for helping essential workers and making sure that our legislative efforts to recover from the deadly coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19) pandemic prioritize the needs of workers, families and local communities. You may be pleased to know that I partnered with Senator Ed Markey of Massachusetts to co-author and lead a joint letter to Senate Leadership outlining five principles that should guide the development of future economic relief packages to make sure this public health crisis does not exacerbate income inequality, racism and environmental injustice:Health is a top priority, for all people, with no exceptions;Provide economic relief directly to the people;Rescue workers and communities, not corporate executives;Make a down payment on a regenerative economy, while preventing future crises; and Protect our democratic process while protecting each other. If you are interested in reading our full letter, it is available online here. I am also pleased that more than 900 organizations endorsed our five principles, ranging from labor unions to environmental advocates to supporters of economic justice. As your Senator, I am working to increase direct support for Illinois families, essential workers, healthcare heroes and communities in need. Now is the time to make critical investments that will improve our pandemic response, heal our economy and strengthen our Nation to prevent future public health and economic disasters. Please know that I am advocating for these principles as Congress negotiates the next COVID-19 relief package. Thank you again for contacting me on this important issue.
