I spent more than 20 years sharing my love for reading on “Reading Rainbow,” and I am writing to you today to share my thoughts about the recent and incredibly troubling rise in censorship and book banning.
I’ve seen firsthand how powerful books can be, which is why the sharp rise in book bans in libraries and schools across the country is so distressing to me. These bans, which are largely being pushed by Republican politicians and conservative political groups, keep children from learning about themselves and their own identities, shut down discussions, blot out empathy and understanding, and conceal accurate American history.
We cannot become a country of censorship and book bans.
